Quantum Safe

Coins that stay yours even in the quantum era

BitcoBoost gives every user an optional quantum-safe address (it starts with bb1z). Coins sent there can only be spent with a signature that today's and tomorrow's computers can't forge. It is built into the chain's rules and checked by every node, not added on top.

What it is

BitcoBoost has two kinds of addresses. Standard bb1q… addresses work exactly like Bitcoin's, with an ECDSA signature. Quantum-safe bb1z… addresses require a hybrid signature: ECDSA plus ML-DSA-44, the post-quantum standard published as FIPS 204 (also known as Dilithium).

Both checks must pass. Every node verifies them: it has been part of the consensus rules since the genesis block.

Why it matters

A large enough quantum computer could one day work out a private key from its public key. That would put coins on classic addresses at risk, on Bitcoin as well. ML-DSA is designed to resist exactly that kind of attack.

With BitcoBoost you don't have to wait for a future upgrade: you can move your coins to a quantum-safe address today, whenever you decide. Coins on standard addresses stay as they are.

How to protect your BCBO
  1. In the BitcoBoost Miner app open Quantum-safe vault and create your bb1z address.
  2. Use Protect BCBO to move coins from your standard address into the vault.
  3. From the vault you can send with a quantum-safe signature, or move coins back to your standard address.

Mining rewards keep arriving on your standard address. Sends from the vault pay a slightly higher fee, because the signature is much bigger.

Quantum-safe addresses are optional and still young, so these numbers are small today and will grow as people protect their coins. They are public information already recorded in the blockchain: this page only adds them up. Verifiable in the source: src/script/interpreter.cpp (CheckHybridSignature, witness v2) and src/crypto/mldsa/. Updated 2026-10-17 17:09 UTC.
